I will also teach you about color theory and art principles ( line,

taking skills. I give a hands-on teaching approach to all my students and make it

Canon 30D - Low light test - Band Photos : Guys..here are the first low light ( interior ) pics using the Canon 30D and Canon 28-135mm Kit lens. These are pictures of
two local bands in San Diego. I shot at 1600 ASA film speeds and shutter speeds ranging from 1 sec to 1/15 of a sec with apertures
from F3.5 to F 5.6 . The Canon 30D perform well. The Tower Club is a very small club/bar located at 4575 University Ave in
East San Diego. Great venue for new bands to perform and have a small audience.

Camera Reviews - Nikon Vs Canon : Guys...Help me decide.....Nikon D200 versus Canon 30D versus Canon 40D
My current setup: Nikon D70sS, Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens, Nikkor 70-210 Zoom ( recommended by Ken Rockwell )
Canon 10D, Canon 20-35mm 3.5,4.5

My objective is to stay with one system. I shoot a lot of fashion, portraiture, fast action martial arts,
travel, low light situations. I need a wide angle zoom, one portrait lens, and one telephoto zoom.
I was thinking of selling the D70s and Canon 10D and Canon Zoom and get myself a Nikon D200 and Nikon 18-70.
I like the fact that the Nikon D200 is better weather sealed than the Canon 30D...

My other option is to buy the Canon 30d and Canon 17-40 L Lens and a Canon 50mm 1.8 which is within my budget.
And of course there is always the Canon 40D which would cost me more dollars than the Canon 30D. The difference
is $ 400. For me the optics is my best investment but a really good body and better sensor is also a plus..
So guys ,help me decide...

Here's the links from reviews from the top camera experts in the field.

Closeup Photography by Elle : To my photo students..These are samples of some of the closeup, macro work I have done with different digital cameras. You can even shoot with a normal
lens 50mm1.8 with a reverse adapter and get some really good results. But I highly recommend buying a good micro lens. and use a good sturdy tripod.
Reflectors and gobos also help a lot when shooting up close. I will talk more about these techniques in my photo workshops.

Portraits by Elle : To my students....These are samples of some of the hundreds of portraits I have shot through the years for friends and clients. I have taken thousands of frames
on 35mm color and b/w film. Plus shooting thousands of frames on digital.. As much as I like the ease and efficiency of digital, I still prefer film. With film you get more
serious with each frame with shoot. Film gets expensive so you have to make sure each exposure counts. With film you are assured of continuity and capturing the action. With digital, you can get into the bad habit of checking exposure and composition constantly. It disrupts the creative process. Guys, make it a habit of shooting
continuously and with positive momentum until you feel the shoot is over and done with. Control your portrait sessions with your subjects by not allowing anyone to see
the digital images until the whole shoot is over.

You can register and pay for a monthly, quarterly, or yearly rate.
Pay the fees with PayPal or Google Checkout.
After you have signed up for the online tutoring service, we will contact

a list of your camera equipment and accessories, etc.

Be sure to check our Google Calendar link to see what topics are
discuss on each day of the week. A number will be listed where you can
make a conference call. I used a service from a company called
www.FreeConferenceCall.com . It will be fairly easy as all you have to do
is to dial an area code/phone number and a participant access code.

For starters, we will have three conference call sessions every week.
There will be two schedules on each day of the week. One for more
West Coast and Mid West Callers and One for East Coast callers for
the three hour difference. Here are different topics we will cover depending
on who is the guest photographer. I will be moderating the photography
forum and will have guest photographer on board. All guest photographers
are professional working photographers who are active member of APA,
ASMP, EP. The topics can be anything . IE, Digital photography basics,
how to use the most important features of your Nikon D200 or Canon D40,
Lighting basics for portraiture, Photoshop CS2 Basics, Nature Photography,
Macro Photography, etc, and the list goes on. There is a limit of 8 to 10 students
on each conference call. Conference call sessions lasts about 2 hours.

Here are the benefits of signing up for Online Photography Tutoring .
1) You can study at your own pace without having to travel anywhere
2) You can personally talk to a professional photographer for advice on
   anything photographic or photoshop/computer related.
3) You can send questions by email and either get a response by email or phone.
We can usually answer two to three questions a week as now we are getting
overwhelmed with a lot of email .Please be patient and we will get to you.
4) You will saved a lot of money by getting advice on what digital camera/lenses.
accessories to buy for your needs and budget
5) You received the best photographic education ( both technical and creative ) from

session depending on the years of experiences and skills of each photography tutor.
7) You will received discounts on our photography/photoshop workshops which we
conduct in California, Arizona, and New York City.

Also as our subscriber membership gets bigger, we will be giving away photography scholarships to
deserving high school students ( any state ). The students will be selected by a panel of

Balboa Park performers - San Diego : Photo Notes: I shot these images of Michael, a Balboa Park street artist with my Canon 10D and a Canon 100mm Macro Lens..Thanks Larry for loaning me your lens.
We shot around 2 or 3 pm. The weather was a bit overcast. If I had shot with Larry's Canon 40D, the color images would be more stunning. Overall the Canon 10D still
perform very good quality images but with a 40D , the images would even be stellar.

The Nikon Coolpix 5700 is a great travelling camera. I shot these images Sept 16, 2007 the same day I arrive at JFK Airport from San Diego. Brooklyn Heights in an awesome neighborhood ( pretty expensive ) but this is where my sister has been the living the last 10 years. Its a very compact neighborhood. One thing great about New York is the convenience. Everything is within walking distance ( or subway ) for that matter unlike California where you have to drive a few miles just to buy a six-pack.This is what makes me come back to New York time and again.

Night Abstractions - San Diego : Samples of my latest experimentations on San Diego Night Abstractions. My objective is not to come out with sharp colorful photos of interesting subjects at night. Abstraction as used in art refers ro art unconcerned with the literal depiction of things from the visible world. In philosophical terms, abstraction is the thought process wherein ideas are distanced from object. Abstraction uses a strategy of simplification, wherein formerly concrete details are left ambiguous, vague, or undefined. Also things that do not exist at any particular place or time are considered abstract.

Canon versus Nikon Digital Cameras - My recommendations : Dear photo students- Here's a brief article on which digital camera to buy. I recommend only Nikon or Canon DSLR cameras as these are the most popular cameras with a large assortment of lenses.
Also you will get great service from either manufacturer. If you want a warranty on your camera, its
best to buy it brand new from a pro camera shop. Most lenses have 5 years warranties like the Nikon lenses.
Nikon D200 Review by Thom Hogan
Thom is an unbiased reviewer. The D200 is a tough camera and combined with a Nikon 18-200 VR lens
you have everything you need.
http://www.bythom.com/d200review.htm

Nikon D80 Review by Thom Hogan -
Its a lot cheaper than the D200 but it has the same brain. We had one of my students bring his D80 and
its a lot better than my Nikon D70s. I like the Black & White Filters on it ( red, orange, greem , yellow ).
It reminds me of the days when I shoot Tri-X Black and White Film and have to use different colored
filters to get different effects. Now you don't need to buy filters as they're all built into the camera as
software. If you want to save time converting to black and white in Photoshop from your color images,
then the Nikon D80 is the camera to buy.

http://www.bythom.com/d80review.htm

Lenses to buy for the Nikon DSLR camera
1) 50mm -1.8 lens - For portraiture
2) Nikon 18-55mm VR lens ..see the reviews
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_18-55_3p5-5p6_vr_n15/
You can buy the kit lens Nikon 18-55mm on Craigslist for like $ 60. The one with VR is more than
double the price. VR is image stabilization so it gives you an advantage of 2-3 stops in low light conditions
3) Nikon 18-200 VR Lens ...Amazing high quality lens ...Buy this lens plus the 50mm 1.8 portrait lens and you are
set to cover all the different focal lens for portraits, nature, macro, action shots, travel. Check Ken's review
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm
I would buy the lens at Costco and buy the Nikon Body at Calumet Photo or Samy's
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11283646&search=Nikon&Mo=12&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=Nikon&Ntt=Nikon&No=9&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1
4) Nikon 55-200mm VR ...Good lens also if you're on a budget plus the 18-55mm and the 50mm 1.8 lens
and you have a complete set. Read Ken Rockwell review on the 55-200mm VR. He is the Nikon expert.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200/versus-55-200mm.htm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Canon 40D Review by Paul Askey -
I almost bought this camera but decided on a Canon 30D instead. This camera is a lot quieter
than my Canon 30D shutter. Almost as quiet as my Nikon D70s .And it shoots fast and great
for action photography. Its a bit more bulkier than a Nikon D40 D70 but it is sturdy and
almost weathersealed same as the Nikon D200.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/

What lens to buy for the Canon.
1) 50mm 1.8 lens for portraiture - about $ 100
2) Canon 18-55mm EFII- There is an IS version ...Very good lens for less money
3) Canon 70-200 EF F4 IS Lens w/ Image Stabilizer. The non IS version you can buy on craigslist
for around $ 550. Check the review on the IS version ..
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06082414canon70-200f4lens.asp

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A word about buying from Best Buy and Costco. If you want to save money, you can get a better
deal if you buy it as a package. I did not find any deals on any Canon or Nikon on Best Buy.
Here is what I found out at Costco. A Canon 40D with 28-135mm lens.About $ 1200.
But you still need to get a long telephoto zoom lens and a portrait lens for low light photography
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11248275&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1

Costco has a 90 day return policy versus Bestbuy restocking fee of 18 percent or more.
About upgrading to a better lens. Avoid buying the kit cameras that come with DSLR bodies.
The 18-55mm kits lens is good quality but I won't buy the 28-135mm lens that comes with the
Canon. And some Nikon DSLR bodies like the D80 comes with the 18-135mm lens which is
an okay lens. If you want quality .get the Nikon 18-200 mm VR lens.

My best advice for you is to buy it from a professional camera store like Calumet or Samy's.
The price difference will be about the cost of sales tax versus to buying it online and you can always
go buy to the store and talk to an experience camera person. Most pros like me buy online from
Adorama & B & H but for newbies to digital photography I would recommend buying it from a
professional camera store where all the Pro photographers buy their stuff.
Here are some links..

1) Calumet Photo in Santa Ana. There's a guy there who I send all my photo students..Very helpful people
http://www.calumetphoto.com/locations
2) Samy's Camera - This is where I buy stuff sometimes or rent lenses when I'm shooting in LA.

Nikon DSLR and just learn to use three commands: Manual, Shutter Priority, and Aperture

About your photo instructor:
Your photo instructor is a full-time working
photographer/web designer who has been teaching digital technology workshops for the
last 4 years in Los Angeles,San Diego, San Francisco, & New York . Elle G. also

is not working with clients, Elle is teaching private photo workshops with his
students.

 Web Design Workshop for Beginners

I teach a Beginner's Web Design class for 4 hours and a full day class as well..4 hour class cost $ 160 per person and full-day class cost $ 250 per person. This is a great workshop for someone who wants to learn how to make their own website. Almost everyone I know has their own website whether on myspace, face book, or their own domain website. I will show you the ropes of both good and bad web design. If you are an entrepreneur (or they call us now infopreneurs ) you need to have a website to promote yourself. That and craigslist promotion and you're in business.
With the whole day workshop, I start off on the basics of the Internet, how Google works, Craigslist, and HTML. html is the building blocks of the Internet. For some people its like reading the Egyptian hieroglyphics. But don't be intimidated, I can start you off with the basics so you can learn how to create your ad with type and images.
I also show you how to create a simple site with Microsoft publisher using templates and how you can modify them. I also show you how to create graphics and optimized images using Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS2. In web design, all graphics and photos and color schemes must be optimized for fast loading. I don't encourage using Flash unless you just want it for special effects for Page intro.
I also teach beginning Dreamweaver. This is a more sophisticated program as it tells you when you are messing up code or missing links. What makes it hard to learn is that it is a multi-media program incorporating text, graphics, video, photos, code..But I can teach you the basic concepts and from there you just have to practice and do a lot of reading. At the end of the day, you will be able to make your own web page. If you want more info about this all day workshop, email me for more info. The four web design workshop covers the basics of HTML, myspace, craigslist, and Microsoft Publisher. or I can teach you dreamweaver and HTML basics for four hours...
